I spoke with Cynthia Gordon (Director of Special Education) earlier today. She called to follow up on any questions on I had. She stated that it is due to the increase in the ASD program and that the Instructional Program shows steady enrollments. Since the ASD programing is expanding, they need to move it to where we are now. She also explained their hope is to have a permanent place for all programs so they don't have to move them. Again, the biggest issue is moving the most vulnerable kids, in a move that seems completely unnecessary. I hear the district say a lot that they try to "avoid" moving programs as little as possible-yet I am finding out that this happens ALOT. So clearly the data they are going off of is inaccurate and they shouldn't be basing the program moves solely off of that and someone who doesn't know what they are talking about.
If the district sticks by their word and does have construction completed in time by the next school year (which still that's end of August-will they really have it done by then?), isn't that just a waste of tax payers money? When there is already have a building perfectly accommodated for our children in the Instructional Program? Why move it to spend money to make a different building accommodating when the program has been where it's at for so long?
Still many unanswered questions that we will continue to fight for finding out answers for. The district needs to be more transparent with parents and their plans they have for our children and not expect us to be okay with a vague letter they send out in the mail for something they decided on months ago.
