Removal of all SROs in Colonial School District

Removal of all SROs in Colonial School District
The Issue
My name is Brianna Fletcher and I am a 17 year old rising senior at William Penn High School in New Castle, Delaware within the Colonial School District. Throughout my time as a student in the Colonial School District, I began to realize that instead of social workers and school psychologists helping students with trauma, the district relies heavily on state police. The Colonial School District has participated in a wider disturbing national trend wherein children are funneled out of public schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems. Many of these children have learning disabilities or histories of poverty, abuse or neglect, and would benefit from additional educational and counseling services. Instead, they are isolated, punished and pushed out. Zero-tolerance" policies criminalize minor infractions of school rules, while cops in school lead to students being criminalized for behavior that should be handled inside the school. Students of color are especially vulnerable to push-out trends and the discriminatory application of discipline. That is why I have started this petition, because we believe that the District must end all contracts with the state police. We are targeting all members of the School Board.
