Loosening the Dress Code of the Waterford School District
Loosening the Dress Code of the Waterford School District
Here at Waterford, students are constantly sent out of class for “inappropriate attire”. Many believe the dress code does more harm than good. For example, students who can’t afford new clothes are subjected to being told their clothing is too “tight” or “revealing”. This leaves students embarrassed to even talk about their situations. Another flaw in the dress code is body type targeting. Two different students can wear the same shirt, yet only one would be dress coded. As young individuals we shouldn’t have to worry about covering up non-sexual extremities. As young individuals we shouldn’t have to worry about being sexualized for things we rely on as self expression. During this time of our lives we are proud of who we are and we aren’t afraid to show it.
Things like shoulders, backs, stomachs and legs shouldn’t have to be covered to the extent that is being pushed. Instead of embracing rape culture and victim blaming, we hope to take steps in a direction where the bodies we are born with get normalized. Not to be kept a secret.
