Seat in the classroom should mean Seat on the School BUS!

Seat in the classroom should mean Seat on the School BUS!

The Issue

I have been fighting the the Haverhill School district, to get my 6 year old son bus transportation to and from his public school. I have contacted the school principal, bus company, transportation department, and superintendent asking for help in this matter.  Not only has no one offered a reasonable hand in assistance, no one has EVER returned my call. My fiance and I work full time, our children go to a grandparents house for before and after school care. She watches 4 children total, she is unable to drive, and unable to walk .97 miles (one way) to the school. Our family along with many other are being told that are children must walk to school because they reside less than 1 mile away. For my 6 year old first grader I feel this is completely unacceptable and the fact that no one seems to care is an outrage. I have been told that this is a long standing "rule" put forth by the school board. It is my goal to get this "rule" revisited and hopefully put forth more appropriate guidelines moving forward. I would think that most parents of young children would agree it is not safe to have them walking alone, ever, especially on busy roads, hot, cold, and inclement weather.

At this point, I'm continuing to fight the good fight, but I am worried that even if I am granted a bus this year I will find myself in the same position next year. Please support my cause and initiate much needed change. No child should be forced to walk the streets alone to attend public school
