Students should feel comfortable in their own clothing of choice at school

Students should feel comfortable in their own clothing of choice at school
The Issue
This petition is in complete respect to administration and is only taking the best of everyone's interest into consideration. It is understood that the school makes the choices it makes in best interest and safety of the students, however this petition represents the majority of student's thoughts on the new dress code policy. After talking to several students at The Quarry Lane High School, we have come to a conclusion about the Dress Code. As people, we should have the right to feel comfortable and not worry about others (peers, teachers, etc.) sexualizing us or judging us for our choice of clothing. Leggings are one of the most common and convienent pieces of clothing for a student to wear to school. Females more specifically go through menstrual cycles every month, and during this time jeans are not a comfortable choice. This can impact our education and our comfort in our own school. This also applies to sweatpants and activewear. Changing this dress policy will not only improve our feeling of discomfort it will also lead to better attention spans (less fiddling with uncomfortable clothing) and thus a better education. Students at school should be surrounded in an environment where they don't feel judged for wearing a specific article of clothing. Females should not be taught that they should change because what they wear is a distraction for others. This not only lowers self confidence but also promotes misogynistic culture. As much as females, males also choose to wear sweatpants as a form of casual and comfortable clothing to school. The Quarry Lane School should display professionalism through student grades instead of outerwear. A study shows that students wearing self-flattering and comfortable clothing actually improves test scores. Which is a win win for the school and the students. Dress Code should in fact be a policy at this school, however not to the point where it negatively impacts a student. We hope that the administration reconsiders these new rules against leggings, sweatpants, and athletic bottoms in benefit to everyone. In this petition we ask for support to end unethical dress code policies.
