Petition Title: Global Historical Responsibility: Integrating the Asian Dimension of the Second World War into Educational Curricula
To: The Ministries of Education, international educational institutions, human rights organizations, and the governments of the involved states.
Background:
The remembrance and processing of the tragedies of World War II in Europe form a fundamental and indispensable component of our educational systems. However, to foster a truly holistic, global awareness of history and human rights, the Asian dimension of this global conflict (1931–1945) must no longer be neglected.
The systematic massacres (such as in Nanjing), the biological human experiments conducted by Unit 731, and the organized sexual enslavement ("comfort women") claimed millions of innocent lives. Modern history education that aims to raise young people with global perspective and empathy must address these events. This is essential to understanding contemporary geopolitical risks and transnational cultures of remembrance. A purely Eurocentric focus in curricula fails to reflect the diversity of our modern society and global historical reality.
We demand:
Curricular Expansion: The mandatory inclusion of the Asian dimension of World War II in upper-secondary history curricula.
Promotion of Educational Materials: The provision of well-founded, multi-perspective teaching materials regarding the international law processes in Asia (such as the Tokyo Trials).
Project Funding: The support of school projects focusing on global remembrance culture and the historical processing of war crimes in the Asian theater.
