The Issue

We are LOSING our quality of life and health in one of the #1 places to move in the U.S. because of ONE company!

New Indy Paper Mill that sells brown paper to big partners like Amazon has moved into our community in SC, outside of Charlotte and is POISONING all of our families and children within a 30-mile radius with its deadly emissions of hydrogen sulfide and other toxic chemicals from an outdated production facility and expired contract that is in violation of the CLEAN AIR AND WATER ACT.

HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of people and their pets across 4 counties in the Charlotte suburbs along the NC/SC border are suffering from nose bleeds, dizziness, headaches, nausea, burning eyes, and throat and can’t escape the foul, noxious odor that is limiting our ability to go outside and suffocating us in our own homes. We are terrified for our health and our family's health!

Kraft Company owners purchased this plant from Resolute/Bowater in 2019 and invested $240 million to convert it from white to brown paper manufacturing but FAILED TO INVEST in adequate modifications and modernization to control the increased emissions they are releasing 10 TIMES what humans should be exposed to!

EPA issued an emergency order 60 days ago, issued a follow-up injunction, and has designated this a "Superfund Site," but New Indy has failed to do enough to clean up its act and we continue to suffer day after day, week after week, and month after month from its deadly pollution and smell.

And while we’re suffering, New Indy is pushing our state for an INCREASE OF THESE TOXIC EMISSIONS into our air and water! They are ROBBING US of our most basic human needs!

We want this plant SHUT DOWN NOW, WORKERS PAID FOR TIME OFF, ITS SITE CLEANED UP, AND ITS PRODUCTION PROCESS MODERNIZED to make it SAFE to breathe and LIVE again in York, Lancaster County, Union, and Mecklenburg counties of NC and SC!
