The Old Spanish Days is a racist celebration that the city uses to collect more money through taxes by bringing in an influx of tourists. Let us call Fiestas for what it truly is, exploiting Mexican culture. We have a local holiday here called Old Spanish Days where people show up dressed in sombreros, wearing ponchos, while eating Mexican Food listening to Rock and Roll Music from an American band. Where is the Spanish heritage in this?

One of the biggest draws, and what it is widely known for is the “cascarones” or the hollow eggshells stuffed with confetti. The streets during Fiestas are filled with the confetti dropped on all our friends and family, and for most is a must to truly celebrate Fiestas. This tradition and use of these eggshells originate in Mexico as well. The people behind Fiestas needs to change the name to reflect it for what it truly is: A holiday where we celebrate Mexican culture. Not a single mention of Mexico or our people is ever stated in any of the advertising for Fiestas. We know it, they know it, this is a celebration of Mexico. The title needs to reflect our people, and the importance that we had and continue to have locally, and nationwide. It is upsetting and hurtful. To see many tourists come wearing sombreros, eating tacos, and jamming out to the Rock and Roll band that plays every year is insulting. I ask, where is the cultural awareness here? How can the city celebrate and exploit Mexican culture without every making a mention that Fiestas is about Mexican culture? Imagine a holiday in Mexico, where American culture is celebrated by offering Älplermagronen, Mille-feuille, and having a Mexican band playing Banda music and corridos? This would be an insult to the American community and showcase cultural ignorance. This is what Santa Barbara has been doing and continues to do to our people. The name needs to change to remind everyone coming to celebrate and enjoy our city that these beautiful and fun days in the summer are to celebrate Mexican culture. More local Mexican bands need to be represented on stage in front of city hall. Bandas should be represented on stage, Mexican music should be the main attraction on the stage. Old Spanish Days ignores the “Spanish” of its name and misrepresents several cultures every year. Our people have been through turmoil and continue to face racism today. Now, locally we are reminded how insignificant we feel by the city taking our culture and heritage, exploiting it, and labeling it a “Spanish” Celebration.

Do the right thing and change the name.
