Say Yes to Recess Wyoming
The Issue
We are Say Yes to Recess Wyoming, part of a growing national movement of parents, educators, and community members working to restore and protect developmentally appropriate recess for every child.
Currently, Wyoming does not have a statewide law guaranteeing elementary students a specific amount of daily recess. While the Wyoming Department of Education has promoted recess and physical activity as important components of school wellness, the amount of recess a child receives can still depend largely on local school and district practices.
We believe Wyoming can do better.
We are calling on Wyoming lawmakers to guarantee elementary students two separate 30-minute recess periods every school day — a total of 60 minutes of daily recess.
Why Two Recess Periods?
Children aren’t designed to sit for long stretches of the school day.
Recess provides opportunities for unstructured play, movement, creativity, problem-solving, independence, and meaningful social interaction. Breaking up the school day with both a morning and an afternoon recess gives children opportunities to reset before returning to academic instruction.
Recess is not a reward. It is an essential part of a developmentally appropriate school day.
We are asking Wyoming leaders to establish statewide protections that:
Guarantee elementary students two separate 30-minute recess periods every school day, totaling 60 minutes.
Ensure recess is in addition to physical education, not a substitute for it.
Protect recess from being routinely withheld for punishment, unfinished work, or additional academic instruction.
Provide safe, inclusive, and accessible opportunities for play.
Ensure that access to meaningful recess does not depend on a child’s school, district, or ZIP code.
Wyoming already recognizes the importance of physical activity and student wellness. Now it’s time to make sure those values are reflected in the school day for every child in the state.
Sixty minutes may sound like a lot in a busy school schedule. But childhood development doesn’t stop when children walk through the school doors.
We can value academics and give children the time they need to move, socialize, imagine, and play.

Two recesses. 30 minutes each. Every child. Every day.
Say YES to recess, Wyoming.
