The Issue
Lenasia, a suburb renowned for its rich cultural heritage and tightly-knit community, is now faced with a proposal to open a Shoprite Liquor store within the Signet Terrace Shopping Center. This decision poses a significant concern for us, the residents of Lenasia, particularly considering the predominantly Muslim community residing here.
The introduction of a liquor store in our neighborhood conflicts with our values and traditions. Islam prohibits the consumption of alcohol, and having a liquor store in our local shopping center would not only be disrespectful to our cultural beliefs but may also lead to an increase in public disturbances and related issues stemming from alcohol abuse.
Various studies have shown that the availability of alcohol in residential areas can lead to increased crime rates and social disturbances. For instance, a report by the Institute of Alcohol Studies highlighted that areas with higher density of alcohol outlets are associated with higher levels of violence and crime. Another study by the World Health Organization found a direct link between alcohol availability and alcohol-related harm.
Furthermore, our community has long been a safe haven for families who wish to maintain a lifestyle in alignment with their faith and values. Bringing in a business that fundamentally contrasts with these beliefs risks disrupting the harmony we have worked so hard to cultivate.
We urge the authorities and decision-makers involved in this proposal to consider alternative business opportunities that align with the character and values of Lenasia. Establishments that promote family-friendly services, cultural gatherings, or even those that support local businesses and artisans, would be far more in keeping with our community's ethos.
The time to act is now. With your support, we can present a united front to halt the opening of the Shoprite Liquor store in Signet Terrace Shopping Center. Sign this petition and let the decision-makers know that we stand strong in preserving the integrity and values of Lenasia. Your signature matters and can pave the way for a more respectful and harmonious community environment.
