Say NO to the new KFC in Heretaunga St East, Hastings 🍗🚫
The issue
Hastings does not need another KFC!
Restaurant Brands has applied for resource consent to demolish 914–916 Heretaunga St East (the old Vege Shed and Women’s Fitness Studio) and build a new drive-through KFC — open 10am until midnight, seven days a week, with a giant 8-metre-high illuminated bucket sign.
We already have a KFC in Hastings. Putting another one at the opposite end of Heretaunga Street will:
- Disrupt neighbours with late-night traffic, noise, light, and odours — right against their fences.
- Harm local small businesses, like the Heretaunga Superette, who can’t compete with multinational fast-food giants.
- Undermine community health, in a city already struggling with high rates of diet-related illness.
- Erode progress made on the East end of Heretaunga Street, turning it into another fast-food strip.
Neighbours were never consulted about this. Restaurant Brands is asking the Council to treat this application as “non-notified,” meaning the community might not even get a say.
Our Demand
We call on Hastings District Council to:
- Publicly notify this application so the community can have its voice heard.
- Decline consent for a second KFC in Hastings.
Hastings deserves better. We need to support local business, protect residents, and uplift the health and mana of our city — not hand our streets over to multinational fast-food chains.
Add your name to stop a second KFC in Hastings East. Together, we say: “Cluck, NO!”
