The Issue

Jim O'Callaghan, the Minister of Justice in Ireland, appointed Niamh Sweeney, a former senior lobbyist for Meta, as the Data Protection Commissioner. This decision strikes me, and many others, as a troubling compliance with corporate interests over citizens' rights to privacy.

It raises significant concerns about the impartiality of the Data Protection Office when led by someone so intimately connected with a major player in the technology industry.
