Dear Mayor, Councillors, and City Staff,
I remain extremely opposed the the crematorium. The Public Information Meeting that was held on January 28 was a farce. It's obvious that the developer has no intention of working with the public or City Staff, and what little information the developer has provided is highly inaccurate and potentially false.
The development application will be presented to Mayor and Council on Monday June 23. I urge you to direct staff to terminate work on the development application.
In the meantime, please provide responses to the following seven questions as soon as possible:
1. Why is the crematorium and funeral home being located in a residential and ecologically sensitive area?
2. Why is it not being located in the industrial area of the Anniedale-Tynehead NCP?
3. If it can’t be located in the industrial area of Anniedale-Tynehead, why is it not being located in one of the many other industrial areas in Surrey (Campbell Heights Business Park, South Westminster and Bridgeview Industrial Areas, Port Kells Industrial Area, Newton Industrial Areas and Business Parks, Cloverdale Industrial Areas, Rosemary Heights Business Park, Highway 99 Corridor, Douglas Industrial Area)?
4. Why are other businesses forced to abide by land use regulations and pay high market rates for appropriate land?
5. Why are all other properties in the Anniedale-Tynehead NCP with the same land use designation as 9280 and 9350 168 Street assessed and taxed at 500% higher value per acre in 2024?
6. The future sewer and water capacity is already extremely limited in the Anniedale-Tynehead area. The crematorium is a massive non-conforming commercial business - it will steal precious water and sewer capacity from residential taxpayers who are abiding by land use regulations. Where will the crematorium get its water and sanitary servicing from?
7. Has the City studied the human health impact from exposure to crematorium emissions? This study from the National Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health (part of the BC Centre for Disease Control) states, "The absence of emissions data for crematoria and ambient air quality monitoring in the vicinity of installations limits the ability to fully assess exposures and health impacts. A precautionary approach could be adopted that includes following best practice recommendations for design, operation, monitoring and maintenance of crematoria."
Sincerely,
Concerned Surrey Resident
