The Council are considering granting planning permission on the site of the car wash on the Cirencester Road to Tesco. This will allow the creation of one of their express stores in an area that simply does not need them or another supermarket.

There is already significant local opposition to the proposal - http://tinyurl.com/kj6lqpf [Gloucestershire Echo, October 2013]. The owner of the popular car wash business has been unable to renegotiate the lease on the site and has been told it will terminate in February 2014.

The main objections to the proposal are:-

1. Significantly increased traffic on the A435 that goes past the site. These stores tend to open for long hours (e.g. the Tesco Express on Queens Road [opposite the railway station] opens from 06:00 - 23:00 7 DAYS A WEEK). It is obvious that the amount of traffic (delivery lorries, customers) would cause noise and a greater risk of accidents.

2. There is no need for another supermarket in this area. The area is well served by the Co-op, Budgens, Nisa and other local shops (newsagent, butchers etc). There is no demand for more stores of this type.

3. The longer term impact, as shown in many studies nationally, is that local businesses suffer when large supermarkets move in. There is every reason to believe this would be the case in this development and it would destroy the community feel of the area.

HISTORY SHOWS PROPOSALS LIKE THIS DO HAPPEN BECAUSE OF INERTIA AND APATHY. IT IS VITAL THE WHOLE COMMUNITY STANDS UP AGAINST THIS AND MAKES THE COUNCIL AWARE OF THE SIZE OF FEELING AGAINST THE PROPOSAL.
