Say No to Styrofoam Lunch Trays at SVUSD Elementary Schools

Styrofoam is harmful to our environment and takes up valuable space in our landfills. It does not to decompose over a million years and styrene, one of Styrofoam's main ingredients, can cause acute skin irritations and other health problems. We would like Saddleback Valley Unified School District to replace these lunch trays with an alternative material, such as cardboard or a different biodegradable material in all the elementary schools. The SVUSD high schools and junior highs are currently using a cardboard tray. Saddleback Valley Unified School District is one of only two school districts using these harmful Styrofoam trays.
Our local elementary school Girl Scout troop asked why the school district was still using Styrofoam lunch trays. The main reason given by the current Food Services Director, Ms. Riki Pollard, was cost. Our Girl Scout troop was willing to raise funds and get organizations like the local PTA to help with the cost difference at their school as a pilot program. After a brief trial using paper trays, the Food Service Director said that going to a paper lunch tray would not be a good long term solution. The Girl Scouts of Troop 3394 were not willing to end their effort for this cause and now need your help.
We need supporters to sign our petition so the Saddleback Valley Unified School District will end the use of Styrofoam lunch trays in the elementary schools. The more people to help us say "No to Styrofoam lunch trays" the better a positive result should be. We are especially asking for supporters' of the students and families in our Saddleback Valley Unified School District.
