Say NO to Skipping Senior High School: Oppose Senate Bill 11213
The Issue
Recently, the Senate Bill 11213 also known as the "Education Pathways for Basic Education Students" was approved on its second reading by the House of Representatives. This bill will allow the Grade 10 students to skip Senior High School and will be directed to college after moving up as long as the student/s will pass the "honor exam".
However, as a Senior High School student, this Bill should be opposed. Senior High School is the path where students are being trained and prepared for college life. So, how will the Grade 10 students be trained if they are going to skip it? Qualifications for college are not always measured on academic knowledge for them to just take an honor exam.
College is not merely about knowledge,it is also about socializing and time management. This skills are being practiced in Senior High School, like for example "immersion". The purpose of this as a subject in SHS, is to give knowledge about students' preferred course, make students step out from their comfort zones and socialize with other people, and give them insights about how a specific job works, and that will be helpful for them in the future.
Continuing Senior High School is an advantage. Before, it was only K-10, that is why students before did not experience immersion and did not take applied subjects that is beneficial for us at present. But the DepEd added a 2 years to the existing curriculum; Senior High School for students to be well trained, fully prepared and orientated.
