Say No to Rezoning East Thunderbird Square North! "No High Rise in Our Skies!"

The new owner of East Thunderbird Square North shopping center, bordered by Hearn Rd to the south, Acoma to the north, Scottsdale to the east and our neighborhood to the west, has submitted a proposal to the City of Phoenix to rezone this from a C-2 use to a Planned Unit Development or PUD. The owner, who lives in California and purchased this property for 39 million dollars, is proposing a completely new design to include three massive buildings only 60 ft from existing residential lots that will be 7 stories (90 ft) tall and two additional buildings 8 stories high along Scottsdale Road. The proposal includes 457 residential units, a 300-room hotel, commercial and retail space which will create a huge amount of population density and with that an increase in traffic and noise in and around our neighborhood.

While many people may like the idea of an upscale shopping center, we believe this can be achieved without the excessive height of the proposed buildings. Keep in mind the height of these buildings will completely block our view of the McDowell Mountains and for those residents at the end of our development not only will this completely shade their yards all morning but reflect light into their homes in the afternoon. Additionally, people will be able to look down into the yards and windows of our homes for a great distance causing a loss of privacy on a large scale.

This is NOT what we planned on when we moved into this neighborhood.  The photo above is an artist's rendering looking west. As you can see, the building is MASSIVE and is completely out of place next to residential homes.

Please help us stop this development and support and preserve our neighborhood by signing the petition below in opposition to a zoning change.

We need to speak up now. Let your voice be heard. Signing this petition is only the first step. We implore you to come to the neighborhood meeting, February 22nd, at Sandpiper Elementary School at 7 pm.

Additionally, you may write a letter to our City Councilman, Jim Waring and Hannah Oliver our Village Planner at the addresses below.
