Petition updateSay NO to parking charges in WetherbyReminder: Have Your Say on Leeds City Council’s Parking Charges Consultation Before the Deadline

The statutory consultation on introducing parking charges in Wetherby and several other locations across Leeds is coming to a close this week .The consultation deadline is Friday, 14 March 2025, so now is the time to make sure your voice heard.

Why does this matter?

The proposed charges could cost a full-time worker in Wetherby up to £860 a year. At a time when national insurance and business rates are rising, this extra burden could harm local businesses and drive customers away from our town centre. Additionally, these charges will likely push more vehicles onto residential streets as drivers seek to avoid paying, worsening congestion and inconvenience for local residents.

The Council previously held an informal consultation, and the public response was overwhelmingly against the proposals—97% of over 6,000 responses opposed the charges. Despite this, Leeds City Council is pressing ahead. There is precedent for councils having decisions overturned when they ignore consultation results, so it is critical that we all participate in this process.

How to Respond to the Consultation

If you believe these parking charges would be harmful, please take a few minutes to submit your objection. Here’s how:

Where to Send Your Objection

You can object or make representations in writing by:

Emailing: districtcarparks@leeds.gov.uk

Writing to: Parking Services, Leeds City Council, P.O. Box 139, Leeds LS9 1AA

Your objection must be submitted no later than Friday, 14 March 2025.

What to Include in Your Objection

  • Explain how the charges will affect you, your family, your business, and the town.
  • Use your own words—avoid copy-pasting objections as identical responses may be counted as one.
  • Encourage each member of your household or business to submit an individual response.
  • If you visit or shop in Wetherby but don’t live there, you can still object.
  • Business owners: Urge your staff and customers to respond.
  • Consider objecting to the charges in all affected areas, not just Wetherby.
  • Request that the Council replies to you by post, as they must respond to all objections individually.

Thank you for your support!

Alan
