PORQUÊ? / WHY? Em Portugal, o governo tem passado mensagens contraditórias. Em Novembro de 2016, em Marraquexe, na COP22, o Primeiro-Ministro António Costa declarou que Portugal seria carbono neutro em 2050. Dois meses depois, em Janeiro 2017, o mesmo governo deu licença à GALP/ENI para avançar com a prospeção de gás e de petróleo no mar de Aljezur, ignorando as mais de 42 mil pessoas que se manifestaram contra o furo, durante a consulta pública. O governo cancelou dois contratos da Portfuel, e 4 da Repsol/Partex no Algarve, mas mantêm-se 3 outras concessões petrolíferas no mar na Bacia do Alentejo, e outras 6 entre Lisboa e Porto no mar e em terra. Para isso, uma das prioridades tem de ser o anulamento imediato de todas as áreas de concessões, e de todos os contratos de concessões ainda em vigor para a prospeção e exploração de gás e de petróleo ao longo da costa portuguesa, do Algarve à Beira Litoral, do Oeste à Costa Alentejana. É imperativo que os contratos em vigor ou em fase de negociações diretas sejam anulados, porque na nossa opinião, estão baseados numa lei inválida. Não é possível uma política climática coerente que possa coexistir com estes contratos de petróleo e gás natural. É também imperativo que a licença de TUPEM atribuida no dia 11 de Janeiro de 2017 ao consórcio ENI/Galp para furar o mar de Aljezur seja anulada. Fazemos esta intervenção pública porque enquanto cidadãos e coletivos queremos um país e um planeta em marcha para um novo paradigma energético, que respeite os direitos humanos, que ponha as pessoas e a natureza acima dos interesses da indústria petrolífera. Queremos uma outra economia livre de conceitos e práticas que nos arrastam para a catástrofe. In November 2016, in Marrakesh, during the COP22, the Portuguese Prime Minister stated that Portugal would be carbon neutral by 2050. Two months later, in January 2017, the same government issued a TUPEM license to GALP/ENI to drill the first deep offshore exploration well in the Alentejo Basin opposite Aljezur. The government has cancelled the 2 contracts from Portfuel, and 4 held by the consortium Repsol/Partex, but has decided in their “wisdom” to maintain active the 3 contracts in the Alentejo basin, as well as other 6 between Lisbon and Porto (onshore and offshore). As a result, one of our high priorities is to ensure the immediate cancellation of all current oil and gas exploration contracts currently active and enforce – from Algarve to Beira Litoral, from East to Alentejo coast. Its critical that all current contracts as well as any future contracts currently being negotiated through a “direct negotiation” process be declared null and void, because in our opinion these contracts are based on an invalid law. Its not credible for a government to have a true climate policy while concurrently the same government continues to pursue the exploration of fossil fuels. Furthermore, its imperative the cancellation of the TUPEM license granted illegally to ENI/Galp on 11 January 2017 before the public consultation was finalized. As a result, we are holding this public intervention because both citizens and organizations want governments to follow a new energy paradigm, one that respects human rights, one that places people above commercial interests of the oil industry and its lobbies. We want another type of economic development, one that is free from actions that are quickly leading our planet to disaster and ultimate destruction not of the planet but of mankind. On 29 April we join the International People’s Climate movement, as we are joined across Portugal in various locations demanding serious answers to the challenges facing our climate, our planet, our survival.
