Right now, the nuclear industry is trying to escape its business deadlock by promoting nuclear power under the name of “decarbonization,” especially targeting countries that have not yet introduced nuclear energy.
In support of this push, international financial institutions such as the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) – which had until now clearly stated they would not finance nuclear power – are showing signs of lifting this ban. The World Bank has already signed an agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a pro-nuclear institution.
The World Bank and ADB are funded by member governments and support economic development, poverty reduction, and infrastructure in developing countries. Both institutions have so far explicitly excluded nuclear power from financing and assistance, citing unresolved concerns over (1) nuclear proliferation, (2) safety, (3) radioactive waste, and (4) excessive costs. None of these issues has been solved.
If the World Bank and ADB begin to support nuclear power projects in the Global South, people across these regions will face not only the risks of nuclear proliferation and accidents, but also the burden of unsolvable nuclear waste and massive debt. Meanwhile, the only beneficiaries will be the nuclear industry in industrialized countries.
This is why we have launched this global petition, urging the World Bank and ADB to maintain their ban on nuclear financing.
