Dear Water Watchers,
We don’t have much news to tell you about Niagara Bottling, the water-sucking corporation that wants the Village of Los Lunas Council to grant them 1.14 BILLION gallons of water from the Albuquerque Aquifer.
The Village Council still has not released the report from their water consultants. They have been waiting for this water report since Niagara came back to ask for MORE WATER in June of 2022.
- First Niagara’s request was on the council’s agenda on October 20th.
And then at the last minute the request was removed. - Then the request was going to be on the November 3rd agenda. And then it wasn’t.
- Next, Niagara’s request was going to be on the November 17th agenda. We learned last night (72 hour notice requirement) that now Niagara is not on the agenda.
We feel like we’re playing a cat & mouse game here with the Water Report, water-guzzling Niagara, and the Village Council.
So… we are lining up all of our community protest & opposition actions, ready to launch as soon as we know when Niagara’s request (for 1.14 BILLION gallons of water from our shrinking aquifer…) will actually, really, verifiably be on the Village Council’s agenda.
Until then … we wait. And wait. And wait.
We are not going away. We are ready to fight this request as soon as it raises its ugly head.
Every. Single. Time.
We’ll let you know as soon as we know something. And then we’ll let you know when and where to meet if you would like to join us in making signs for the Village Council meeting – signs to make it clear that the community does NOT want the Village to cater to Niagara’s thirst for our water.
Stay tuned. We appreciate your support. And your patience.
P.S. We put out a community survey about Niagara’s request for MORE WATER. So far, more than 100 community members have responded, and many people have offered powerful comments in opposition to this water grab. We’ll leave you with just one of dozens of those comments:
“Approving a water bottling plant in a largely desert state that experiences historic decades-long droughts is just plain stupid. It should never have happened in the first place. Please don't make a bad decision worse.”
