Mass Killing of 45,000 Wild Horses Recommended - Tell Congress and the Administration NO!
The mass killing of 45,000 wild horses and burros could become reality if the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has its way.
On September 9, 2016 the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board recommended killing of captured wild horses and burros as an “emergency” measure. The agency wants to clear the holding pens so that it can round up 40,000 more wild horses and burros from their homes on the range.
Hours before the recommendation, the BLM cancelled cruel sterilization experiments on wild mares amidst growing public outrage and a barrage of lawsuits. Now the agency is focusing on mass killing of these national icons, but can only do so if Congress and the Administration authorize this lethal and heartless plan.
The American people will not stand for this. Tell the Administration and Congress that we want our wild horses and burros protected and preserved on our public lands, not rounded up and killed or sold for brutal slaughter.

- U.S. House of Representatives
- President of the United States
We the below signed citizens and taxpayers are outraged at the push by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to kill up to 45,000 federally-protected wild horses and burros in holding facilities so it can roundup 40,000 more wild horses and burros from their homes on the range.
As Americans, we will not stand for the mass killing of our iconic and cherished wild horses and burros. You must prohibit the BLM from imposing this lethal and publicly unacceptable solution, which is being presented as an “emergency” measure.
The “emergency” the BLM claims to face is one the agency itself has created by failing to adequately reduce livestock grazing and refusing to implement the long-available and scientifically-proven PZP fertility control vaccine to humanely manage wild herds on the range. Instead, the BLM has stubbornly continued the unsustainable and unscientific cycle of mass roundups, removals and warehousing of horses and burros in holding facilities, even as the National Academy of Sciences recommended and Congress directed the agency to reform.
Please listen to We The People, who have demonstrated time and time again our support for protecting wild horses and burros in the wild and
1. Oppose any effort to lift the prohibition on selling captured wild horses and burros for slaughter and killing of healthy wild horses and burros.
2. Oppose language authorizing the BLM to strip wild horses and burros of their federal protections and turn them over to state, local and other federal agencies from any 2017 budget/appropriations language.
3. Oppose the surgical sterilization of wild free-roaming horses on the range as a management tool.
4. Support the BLM’s increased use of the PZP fertility control vaccine to humanely reduce wild horse population growth rates to reduce or eliminate removals.
Wild horses and burros are protected by an Act of Congress as “living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West.” Americans want these legacy animals protected and roaming wild and free on our Western public lands. The mass killing, slaughter and destruction of our wild horses and burros is not an option. We ask that you take a stand with the majority of Americans who want our historic mustangs and burros protected on our public lands.
