The Issue

Say NO to large or small scale lithium ion battery energy storage "farms" from being built in or next to residential areas.

This petition is for only Southeast and Brewster, NY residents.

The town of Southeast is preparing to rewrite the Master Plan and Zoning Codes regarding lithium ion battery energy storage "farms".  They will be adopting a six month moratorium to research and develop guidelines regarding emerging technology (i.e. lithium ion battery storage facilities and solar "farms").

Please remember the pretty tree filled empty lot next to your house could be the next lithium battery factory site.  Once zoning codes go into effect, stopping a facility from being built, is difficult and costly.

Don't be fooled by the word "farm".  These facilities are factories and contain chemical hazards.

As residents, we need to speak up and protect our homes and neighborhoods from being the next Carmel/Mahopac development.  (https://westchester.news12.com/westchester-residents-join-putnam-neighbors-to-oppose-proposed-carmel-battery-plant

If you are not aware, lithium ion battery energy storage systems (BESS) are massive industrial factories filled with large scale, lithium batteries. These battery factories are designed to store energy to potentially maintain the energy grid for a small period of time during outages.

For all the potential good that they can provide, there are many risks to health (including toxic fumes from fires) related to these facilities.

Last year in New York State there were three fires at BESS.

Fires in an upstate facility, required residences to evacuate within a 1 mile radius of the fire and shelter for several hours that day. The fire department had to remain on the scene for days.  They could not enter the facility until the fire was out and temperatures dropped low enough for safe entry. Residents near the facility are concerned about drinking water quality being impacted from the runoff related to firefighters extinguishing factory equipment.

An East Hampton fire closed down LIRR service, roads and highways.

In Warwick, NY a facility battery built in a lot next to a school and the athletic fields caught on fire, which had been touted as being the newest safest storage system. The fire burned for more than a week effecting the school system and local home owners.

This is the time to stand up and demand protection of our homes and neighborhoods.

If you sign the petition, please write a comment.  The Town Board needs to hear your input to solidify our concerns.
