Say No to Learning Center Cuts!

The Issue

We, the undersigned parents, guardians, and community members of Brookline strongly oppose the proposed cuts to Special Education teachers, specifically Learning Center (LC) teachers. It is unacceptable that the only students facing service reductions are those in Special Education—our most vulnerable learners.

These cuts will have devastating consequences, including:

  • Loss of Individualized Support: Special Education students rely on LC teachers for the targeted instruction and accommodations they need to succeed. Reducing these resources will hinder their academic and social-emotional growth.
  • Violations of FAPE: The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) guarantees every student a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). Cutting Special Education staff will result in students not receiving the legally required support, exposing the district to potential legal consequences.
  • Increased Inequity: Removing LC teachers disproportionately impacts students who already face learning challenges, further marginalizing them and denying them the opportunities they deserve.

We demand that the district:

  1. Immediately halt any planned reductions to Special Education teacher positions.
  2. Ensure all students receive the individualized instruction and support they are entitled to under federal and state law.
  3. Prioritize equitable funding that supports all students, including those with disabilities, rather than targeting Special Education for cuts.

Every child deserves access to an education that meets their unique needs. We will not stand by as essential resources are stripped away from the students who need them most.

We strongly encourage you to attend the upcoming School Committee (SC) meeting, either in person or remotely, to stay informed, to voice your concerns, and to advocate for our most vulnerable students.  Your participation can make a difference in shaping the future of education in our district!

3/27/25 School Committee (SC) Meeting (agenda) is to be held at Brookline Town Hall, 5th Floor and live Streamed by Brookline Interactive Group on YouTube.  Signup to make a public comment!

Past SC Meeting Records and Materials are available online, including FY26 Initial Budget Request, and Presentations to SC on 2/6/25, 2/13/25, 3/6/25, 3/13/25, and 3/20/25
