As the deadline for public input on the proposed LCP Quarry in Brechin approaches, it’s important for residents to be aware of the timelines.

Comments to the Aggregate Resources Act close on Sept. 19, and comments to the Environmental Registry of Ontario will remain open until Oct. 7. This is a critical time for us to have our voices heard.

I’ve often been told, “We need aggregate, especially for building roads, houses, and infrastructure.” I agree with that need, particularly as our communities continue to grow. But shouldn’t we have a comprehensive plan that accounts for the impact of these operations?

Ramara is already surrounded by over 40 quarries. From Gamebridge, along the Trent-Severn Waterway, through Brechin, up to Washago, around Lake Couchiching, and down to Orillia and Atherley, these quarries collectively hold licences for over 22 million tonnes of aggregate extraction. Some are smaller operations with Class B licences, but the total area covered by these quarries is significant — over 2,900 hectares.

The proposed new quarry licence in Brechin covers more than 350 hectares and seeks approval to extract a maximum of two million tonnes per year. This is in addition to nearby quarries that already have licences for millions of tonnes per year, with some operating at a maximum of two million and one million tonnes per year.

Do we really need more aggregate? A report suggests that Ontario currently has 13 times the aggregate it needs. And, according to the auditor general, there is a glaring lack of oversight when it comes to quarries, largely due to insufficient inspectors. Without adequate monitoring, how can we ensure that environmental and community impacts are properly managed?

I believe it’s time to take a pause on issuing new quarry licences until we can be assured of better oversight and planning. Let’s ensure that we aren’t rushing into decisions that could have long-term consequences for our communities and our environment. Say no to the LCP Brechin Quarry licence until oversight improves.
