The Winter Olympics are meant to celebrate peace, unity, and international cooperation. They are not a place for fear, intimidation, or agencies associated with violence and abuse.

Yet the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that ICE agents will accompany the U.S. delegation to the Winter Olympics in Italy.

This announcement has caused widespread outrage among Italians, elected officials, and civil society — and for good reason.

Say NO to ICE at the Olympics.
No armed immigration agents.
No normalization of abuse.
No fear at a global celebration meant to unite the world.

ICE is an agency that has become synonymous with aggressive enforcement, disregard for due process, and deadly outcomes. In recent weeks alone, ICE and other federal agents have been linked to the killing of U.S. citizens and to actions that judges say violated court orders. These events are fresh in the public’s mind, both in the United States and abroad.

Italian leaders from across the political spectrum have voiced alarm. The mayor of Milan has urged Italy to “say no.” Opposition leaders have warned against allowing an armed foreign agency with a record of abuses to be present on Italian soil. Many Italians fear that the presence of ICE — even under the label of “security” — sends the wrong message and risks undermining public trust during a global sporting event.

Italian authorities have said that public order will remain under Italian control. But the question remains: why should ICE be there at all? U.S. diplomatic security has long been handled without ICE agents, and their presence is unnecessary, provocative, and deeply unsettling.

This petition is about protecting the values the Olympics claim to represent: safety, dignity, and respect for human rights.
