Say "NO" To GOP Bills That Ban Drag Shows
The Issue
Confronting those who scapegoat the LGBTQ community. The GOP and Republicans across the nation want to make it illegal for Drag Show Performances. These attacks on the LGBTQ+ Communication are far from Christian actions. Not one Drag Queen has harmed a child or human being. Sign this Petition to support our LGBTQ+ community
New legislation filed by a state senator regarding the LGBTQ+ community is looking to criminalize drag performances in public settings. The bill groups drag performers with other adult cabaret performers, such as exotic dancers, topless dancers, or strippers and would make it a misdemeanor for first offense and felony on the second offense for participating in such behavior. Sen. Jack Johnson presented the bill. He represents District 27 which covers Lauderdale, Lake, Dyer, Crockett and Madison counties, though if passed, the bill would affect the entire state of Tennessee.
We must act immediately! Bill to ban drag show performances around children passes first hurdles in legislature. There now multiple bill in legislation all directed at banning all type of Drag Show performances.
Attacks on drag performers in the U.S. are escalating. The LGBTQ community barely had time to mourn the victims of last month’s mass shooting at Club Q when attackers fired on the power grid in Moore County, North Carolina, allegedly (but very likely) to shut down a local drag show. Such sabotage, which plunged over 40,000 people into darkness, is not an act of protest; it is terrorism.
Why are people so afraid of drag queens? These performers — often, but not always, gay men who don hyper-feminine attire — aren’t harming anyone, whether they are lip-syncing to pop tunes at a bar or reading books to children at a library.
But merely by appearing in public spaces, drag queens are accused of “grooming” by those who fear they are corrupting children with their so-called gender ideology. As trans writer
Julia Serano
explains in her recent blog post, this “stigma-contamination mindset” is not only harmful to the LGBTQ community, but counterproductive:
In addition to defaming the groups in question, these accusations have the unfortunate effect of diluting or weakening legitimate claims of child sexual abuse (CSA). […] While anti-trans/LGBTQ+ campaigners may frame their interventions in terms of “safeguarding children,” they rarely if ever express similar concern over actual cases of grooming and CSA, the overwhelming majority of which are perpetrated by cis-hetero men who are family members or close acquaintances of the child.
Having endured years of childhood sexual abuse at the hands of a straight cisgender male relative, I too want cis-hetero parents to stop scapegoating queer and trans folks, when it’s actually the “normal” ones amongst you who are most likely to be harming your children.
Parents, here are some other people who are actually causing harm to you and your children that you could be addressing, instead of hunting down drag queens:
Anti-vaxxers, who put their families and everyone they come into contact with at risk of deadly, preventable diseases.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) and their supporters, whose response to the increasing number of school shootings is to put firearms into the hands of even more people.
The tobacco industry and their lobbyists, who seek to hook people on their addictive products early to make them lifelong consumers, causing harm both directly and indirectly (via second-hand smoke) in the process.
The animal dairy industry and their lobbyists, who push cow’s milk on people who cannot digest it properly, with the lies that lactose intolerance is abnormal and that calf food is not only healthy but necessary for growing human bodies.
These are just a few examples.
If you don’t like drag queens, news flash: You don’t have to attend their events! Hell, I’m a queer trans activist and I rarely go to drag shows myself.
No one is forcing you to go to a gay bar to watch a drag lip-sync battle. No one is forcing your children to go to the library for drag queen story hour.
If you really fear your children might be forced to see drag queens, perhaps for a school field trip, you can write a permission slip so they can stay home with you and watch a wholesome Hallmark movie, or whatever it is you cis-hetero people do.
Even if we disagree on your reasoning, you not wanting to watch drag performances is fine. You making that choice for other parents and children is not.
As I have argued previously, much of this animosity toward queer and trans people is coming from misguided religious people, conservative Christians in particular. If your religious leader or institution teaches you that acts of violence are appropriate responses to people whose gender or sexual identities differ from yours, you need to find a better religion.
