The Issue

We, the undersigned, strongly oppose the proposed installation of a gondola in Kilbroney Forest Park, Rostrevor by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

Kilbroney Forest Park, Rostrevor is a treasured natural landscape, rich in biodiversity, cultural heritage, and scenic beauty at the gateway to the Mourne Mountains. The introduction of a large-scale infrastructure project such as a gondola threatens to:

  • disrupt fragile ecosystems and wildlife habitats that thrive in the forest
  • alter the natural character and tranquility of an area cherished for outdoor recreation, peace, and connection to nature
  • set a precedent for further commercialisation of protected green spaces in the Mournes
  • undermine sustainable tourism efforts, which should prioritise low-impact, community-driven initiatives.

We believe there are more environmentally responsible and locally beneficial ways to improve access and tourism in the area—without compromising the forest itself.

We call on Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to halt plans for the gondola and engage in genuine consultation with residents, environmental experts, and outdoor users to explore alternative, sustainable solutions throughout the region.
