Say NO to ferrochrome production in Sault Ste. Marie

The city of Sault Ste. Marie has submitted a request to Noront Resources Inc. (a Canadian-based mining firm) to establish a ferrochrome production facility here in town. The city’s reasoning for doing so is that the new facility will create new employment opportunities for the citizens of Sault Ste. Marie. But we need to ask ourselves the question: is the potential for job creation worth risking the health of present and future citizens of Sault Ste. Marie?

Ferrochrome is an iron-chromium alloy. Chromium dust has been shown to settle out of the air, polluting soils and surface water. Contaminants from ferrochrome production have negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems, terrestrial ecosystems, and human health.

Human health will diminish as a result of chromium inhalation, ingestion, or direct skin contact. Chromium has been shown to readily accumulate in human tissues, and excretion of the compound from the body is a slow process. Because of this, negative impacts such as developmental issues to fetuses, damage to skin, respiratory, reproductive and digestive systems and cancers have been found among humans.

These are the risks associated with the presence of a ferrochrome production facility. The citizens of Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding areas deserve better.

Please sign and share this petition to stop the implementation of a potential ferrochrome production facility in Sault Ste. Marie, ON.
