🌊 A major win for ocean wildlife in New Zealand.
After 13 years of determined resistance, plans to mine the South Taranaki Bight, a bay off the west coast of the North Island, have been rejected by an independent expert panel.
The proposal by Trans-Tasman Resources aimed to extract up to 50 million tonnes of iron-rich sands containing vanadium and titanium. The panel found the process posed a credible risk of harm to marine ecosystems.
This decision is a major victory for the critically endangered Māui dolphin 🐬, little blue penguins (kororā)🐧, and countless other species. It shows the power of communities, scientists, Indigenous groups, and ocean advocates standing together to defend the deep sea.
A hopeful reminder that when people refuse to give up, nature can win.💙
