Lots of GOOD news around the issue of deep-sea mining these past weeks!
Malta, Honduras, Guatemala, Tuvalu and Austria all join the growing chorus of nations saying no to deep-sea mining! The round of discussions currently happening at the International Seabed Authority in Jamaica are not even over yet and we have 32 countries siding with caution against the reckless idea of strip mining the ocean floor for minerals.
This news comes off the heels of the new discovery published last week that the very nodules the miners want to rip from the deep-sea are actually responsible for a chemical process in the ocean that produces oxygen!
What an incredible scientific break through! Oxygen was always seen as a product of photosynthesis by plants, whether on land or in the ocean. The fact that we now have another source of oxygen, opens up a whole new world of scientific discovery. This news is something the global community cannot push aside.
As much as the greedy few want to profit from the destruction of our global commons, nations are slowly waking up to the fact that we simply can't afford a new form of ecocide! Two thirds of global wildlife is already gone and the climate crisis is upon all of us. Destroying ancient ecosystems that provide essential services to life on earth is not the best way out of the multiple crises we face today.
Kudos to everyone around the world working relentlessly to stop deep-sea mining from starting!
