No Deep-Sea Mining. Deep-sea nodules found to generate oxygen!

As the International Seabed Authority enters its second week of discussions in Jamaica, an incredible new study reveals that the nodules sitting on the deep-sea bed could be a important source of oxygen in the deep-sea and indeed for our living planet. 

Half of all the oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean. Until now it was assumed that this oxygen came from photosynthesis in the ocean. This new study reveals that the polymetallic nodules themselves - the coal sized lumps that the miners are seeking - could be generating oxygen through a process knows as seawater electrolysis.

With everything we know about how destructive deep-sea mining is, this latest study should put the nail in the coffin for this reckless, irresponsible and down right selfish industry. 

Messing with ocean chemistry without understanding the consequences is simply not a good idea.

It is time we take this campaign on the road. In just a few weeks I will be meeting with Indigenous Communities, fisheries folks and learning institutions in Alaska for the Ocean Hope Expedition about the perils of deep-sea mining.
