This summer of 2026 the free street parking on South Chauncey Avenue and South Salisbury Street was changed entirely to two-hour parking. This is a densely populated residential area where apartment complex parking often cannot guarantee enough spaces for its own residents. Many Purdue students who commute from off campus and cannot afford parking passes relied on these spaces for somewhere to park while in class, as often classes can take up periods of time much greater than two hours. Additionally, Chauncey Square is a large commercial and business area, and many working in this area have to commute. The Lafayette Parking and Traffic Services states that their goal for Downtown Parking is to "Employ the most understandable and least offensive parking management strategies that are, in so far as possible, fair, consistent, and equitable to all." I fail to understand how it is equitable to all to remove free parking in an area where there is not enough parking to accommodate all of its residents.
