Saving the Coney Island Hospital 113 year old Hammett Building

Saving the Coney Island Hospital 113 year old Hammett Building
The Issue
The growth of Coney Island Hospital with the addition of several new buildings unfortunately includes the demolition of the Hammett Building, one of the original Coney Island Hospital structures. The Hammett Building was opened in 1910 at the cost of $350,000 . The Brooklyn Daily Eagle in an article describing the dedication wrote the “New Institution embodies the most modern ideas for caring for the sick and convalescent". The architects Frank Helmle & Ulrich Huberty designed Coney Island Hospital in their offices on Montague Street in downtown Brooklyn. The two men would go on to design some of early 20th century Brooklyn’s best known works, including the Boathouse and Tennis House in Prospect Park, the Greenpoint Savings Bank in Greenpoint, the Hotel Bossert on Montague Street, St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Crown Heights, St. Barbara’s Catholic Church in Bushwick, and the Williamsburg Trust Company in Williamsburg. Unfortunately Huberty died young a victim of typhoid fever and Helmle would go on in his career to design some of Brooklyn's most iconic buildings highlighted by the Spanish Baroque style St. Barbara’s Church in Bushwick. We are having a grass roots effort to save the building and help preserve our history.
