Why this petition matters

Started by Kaylee Fein

The Atlantic Bluefin Tuna are almost extinct! They need your help more than ever. Sign this petition to help decrease the catching and selling of these very endangered fish. The causes of endangerment are overfishing, illegal fishing, and also biomagnification of Mercury in the oceans. Mercury is a very dangerous pesticide that can harm ocean life, which can lead to us having it in our bodies. This is because the Mercury from the fish gets into our body because we obtain some of the mercury levels that the animal had that we ate. This is called biomagnification. Mercury can greatly affect the development of children. For example, already 5-10% of Women in the U.S., who are pregnant at child birthing age, found levels of Mercury in their blood which increased the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, like Autism, for their unborn child. Our goal is to contact the NOAA and persuade them to stop and provide stricter laws about the overfishing of the Atlantic Bluefin Tuna. We also are trying to convince people to stop keeping these fish if they catch one. We also believe an increase in permit prices can help to decrease the amount of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna that are caught since fewer people may own these permits. Without this fish, its entire ecosystem will become unbalanced and can be destroyed. This would cause a broad disturbance in fish and food availability for some. Please take a minute to sign this petition and help save the Atlantic Bluefin Tuna.
