Saving African elephants
Saving African elephants
The Issue
There are approximately 415,000 African elephants left in the world. There are around 40,000 to 50,000 Asian elephants left.An estimated 100 African elephants are killed each day by poachers seeking ivory, meat and body parts.
The number of African forest elephants fell by more than 86% over a period of 31 years, while the population of African savanna elephants decreased by at least 60% over the last 50 years, according to the assessments. The current decrease in elephant populations is primarily due to illegal poaching, demand for ivory products, and factors associated with human population growth.
We want to make sanctuaries and alternative habitats for domesticated elephants to live freely where they are protected. By helping protect elephants we’re also helping make sure their environment and its natural resources are available for generations to come.
