Stop the Boise School Board from Setting the School Start Date August 15th in 2018

The Boise School Board will be voting on the 2018-19 school calendar in October! Please sign our petition today asking school board members to stop school from starting August 15, 2018 (a full week earlier than this year) in Boise.
The Boise School District promoted an on-line survey during the spring of 2017 outlining the desire to begin the school year a week earlier in 2018. The district stated the reasons they wanted an earlier start date but none of the numerous negative aspects of losing a week of summer vacation were explored. Consider:
- August is the HOTTEST month of the year and studies show is not the best month for learning.
- Earlier school start dates DEPRIVE students of real-world learning experiences with their families, such as travel and outdoor recreation.
- Students seeking summer jobs are LESS DESIRABLE to employers if they have to start school early. This deprives students of on-the-job learning and earning potential to save for college.
- An earlier August school start date DOESN'T PROVIDE additional instructional time for our students, but it certainly CUTS TIME SHORT for families to enjoy Idaho’s many outdoor activities. Isn’t it more fun to jump in the lake, camp in the mountains or raft down your favorite river in August than in May?
Research shows the school calendar DOES NOT impact academic success. Successful students are the product of talented teachers, involved parents and hard work.
