Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment
Wolverton Railway Works, Stratford Road, Wolverton
CgMs Consulting 15SG/18590
4.5.11
There was little change to the site until the late 1980s when the timber drying sheds in
the north of the site had been demolished and replaced
(This is wrong) In the 1990s a number of buildings were demolished including the Smithy and the Power House.
The timber drying shed was demolished in 1991 to build the train shed next to the high volt testing. The power house and smithy are still there in 2015. Through the late 60s and the 70's saw big change with buildings going and buildings being added to the site.
The site was visited in September 2014 and comprises the surviving buildings of the Wolverton Railway Works, the oldest railway works in the world. The buildings in the east of the site date from the 19th century and have been left vacant since the 2nd half of the 20th century. These buildings comprise the Saw Mill, Carpenters Shop, Smiths Shop, Forge and Brass Foundry. There are also a number of modern workshops still operational in the west of the site interspersed with traversers
The forge was demolished in the 1960s or 1970s which i have photos of. The brass foundry was on the other part of the site which was demolished for tesco in 1992 again i have photo's of this
A small independent shop displays the legend of LNWR fire station formerly on that plot
The fire station is still there the only thing with the fire station that has changed is it has shops built on it west side but the whole station is there and the side windows are still there just covered up Plus you forgot to add the Bath house is still there too which is now offices
Please the history of the site should be looked into more before before documents that way it will be more truthful.
Questions
I also have some questions i would ike to answer as i may not get chance to at the meeting
⦁ On my last visit to the works site a few months ago all the buildings looked very much in use .So if you give Knorr-Bremse a smaller site how are they fit every thing into the new smaller site?
⦁ I would also like to know why you think the building have no historical value and should not be saved?
⦁ If Places For People can build houses within the old works building why can't you?
⦁ With a smaller site how could they employee any more staff?
⦁ How do you intend of saving wolverton's heritage ? as what you say in the plan is not what wolverton wants
⦁ What is going to happen to the Royal train?
