Save Winter Park's Feral Cats from Starvation!

The Issue

On September 12, 2016, the Mayor and the Board of Commissioners of the City of Winter Park, Florida amended City ordinance Article 1, Chapter 18 of the Code Relating to Animals in City Parks in order to ban the feeding of feral cats in Mead Botanical Garden and providing for fines for violations of the same.  The problem with this ordinance, as many animal welfare groups agree, is that this leads to starvation of these animals which is unduly cruel and inhumane.  In a 4-1 vote, this motion carried.  Nearly four weeks since the ban went into effect, it is without doubt that animals have suffered and died unnecessarily.  The actions of a few are affecting many and through this petition, we hope to change the Board's thinking to get the ban reversed.

There are numerous rescue groups that will gladly care for these animals if allowed to do so.  If the presence of these animals is the issue for the City, then we would like to see rescue groups given an opportunity relocate them to a park that is more animal friendly.

The City of Winter Park's Board of Commissioners has argued that people "dump" their unwanted cats in Mead Botanical Garden park.  Our plea to the Board is that if that is the case, then allow a qualified and appropriate group of animal rescuers and caregivers to deal with them rather than allowing the animals to starve to death.  Why should City leaders be allowed to get away with animal cruelty which is an offense punishable by law?

Your signature on this petition will show the City of Winter Park that their callous actions will not be tolerated.  Please sign and share.
