The Issue
🌳 Save Windsor Drive Open Green Space
Stop CBC Building up to 100 Homes
Windsor Drive Open Green Space in Houghton Regis is under threat - Again.
Central Bedfordshire Council (CBC) is pushing to include our beloved green space in a “Call for Sites” process, the first step toward granting planning permission for up to 100 new homes on one of the last accessible open green spaces in our Town.
We are asking you to sign this petition and stand with residents who are saying: enough is enough.
What is Windsor Drive?
Windsor Drive is more than a field. It is where children learn to play football, where neighbours walk their dogs, where friends run together, where our community came together for the Queen’s Jubilee and the King’s Coronation. It is the green lungs of Houghton Regis, and for many families, the only green open space within walking distance of their home.
Why CBC Must Not Build Here
This is not vacant brownfield land. Windsor Drive has four formal legal protections that CBC is choosing to ignore:
- 📋 Asset of Community Value
Legally registered until 2028, recognising its vital role in community life.
- 🏅 Green Flag Award
Nationally recognised as one of the best green spaces in the country.
- 📖 Local Green Space
Designated in the adopted Houghton Regis Neighbourhood Plan, giving it the same protection as Green Belt under national planning law (NPPF).
- 🌿 Registered Open Space
Recorded in the Parish Schedule as protected Informal Open Space.
CBC’s own Leisure Strategy acknowledges that Houghton Regis already has gaps in open space provision across every category. Building on Windsor Drive would remove 50% of this provision, forcing local families into cars to access green space elsewhere.
Houghton Regis Is Already Doing Its Share
Our town is contributing approximately 10,000 new homes, around 25% of CBC’s entire housing target, at significant cost to our Green Belt. We are not against housing. We are against destroying the community spaces that make our town worth living in.
What We Are Asking For
We call on Central Bedfordshire Council to:
✔ Immediately remove Windsor Drive from the Call for Sites process
✔ Honour the protections in place under the Neighbourhood Plan and national planning policy
✔ Commit to transferring Windsor Drive to the people of Houghton Regis in perpetuity as protected community green space
Please sign. Please share. Please help us protect Windsor Drive for our children,
our neighbours, and every generation to come.
