The Issue

A much loved neighbourhood park and nature area containing a playing field, meadows, hedgerows, trees, core paths and wetland is under threat. Whitegates Park contains “protected habitat” and is located on the outskirts of Lenzie/Kirkintilloch. This critical protected park is one of the few remaining havens for wildlife and people alike who have found themselves increasingly surrounded by major roads and urban developments. It is a peaceful, tranquil area and vitally important in terms of the benefits it offers to the social, emotional, physical and psychological wellbeing for all who use this vital park. East Dunbartonshire Council have identified this area as their preferred site for the new Lenzie Academy Secondary school. This site is allocated as “protected open space” in the council’s Local Development Plan, its destruction makes no sense when there are brownfield sites in the vicinity. I would ask anyone who shares these views to please sign this petition to save Whitegates Park.

Wendy MaguirePetition StarterI work in early years and spend much of my time encouraging our youngest children to connect with nature. I see first hand the benefits these experiences have on their health and well-being and that of the community. Which is why we need to protect them.
