Save West Valley! Stop Costco from destroying our neighborhood

Save West Valley! Stop Costco from destroying our neighborhood

The Issue

SAN JOSE CITY COUNCIL AND MAYOR MAHAN:

The stakes are high for West San Jose, Saratoga, and Campbell residents and businesses. We must act now to STOP COSTCO from taking over the Westgate West Shopping Center (where Orchard Supply Hardware used to be).

Join us in opposing Costco's plan to shoehorn a 40-foot high, 4-acre warehouse with rooftop parking on an undersized lot in the West Valley, directly across from Prospect High School and right in the front yards of established residential neighborhoods.

If San Jose allows this project to proceed, the 10,000 – 12,000 daily vehicle trips and gridlock that comes with every Costco:

  • RISKS THE SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN as they walk, bike, and drive to school.
  • IMPEDES OUR ABILITY TO TRAVEL to and from our homes, our elementary, middle, and high schools, and to Highways 85 and 280.
  • IMPACTS OUR ABILITY TO ACCESS AND PARK near Trader Joe’s, Starbucks, and other Westgate West and nearby stores/businesses.
  • POTENTIALLY SLOWS DOWN EMERGENCY SERVICES that need to get to us quickly.

Why does the City of San Jose want to jeopardize West Valley’s future by supporting this project?

  • There are already two Costcos within 6 miles in more appropriate light industrial areas.
  • There are 1700 new housing units planned right across the street from the proposed site.
  • There will be lasting harm to the quality of life for West Valley residents and businesses.

The residents of West Valley DO want a strong and economically viable shopping center but not at the expense of our safety and quality of life. We envision a community center that combines shopping, housing, entertainment, restaurants, and health clubs, creating a vibrant village that will serve the whole community.

San Jose City Government: VOTE NO on the Costco warehouse project. Endorse instead more forward thinking and appropriate alternatives that will transform Westgate West and the West Valley into a pedestrian and bicycle friendly, transit-oriented, mixed use Urban Village consistent with the Envision San Jose 2040 plan.

We can and must do better to Save West Valley!

NOTE: We want to make sure we get an accurate count of our supportive neighbors. If you have already signed the paper version of this petition, thank you! Please help get more support by sharing this petition with your neighbors at change.org/save-west-valley-say-no-to-costco
