The Issue

Why this is important:

West Glacier is the gateway to one of the most beautiful places on Earth. It is a quiet, historic village defined by its natural beauty and a shared commitment to preserving the "Crown of the Continent." But right now, that village atmosphere is under threat.

Pursuit Attractions and Hospitality Inc. that owns Glacier Park Incorporated (GPI) is proposing a massive "work camp" development between Glacier Avenue and the existing RV park. This plan would clear acres of forest to expand a development of up to 230 temporary seasonal employees in a high-density environment, directly adjacent to a long-standing residential neighborhood, increasing human traffic and potentially threatening wildlife, forest, and water-system health.

We are calling on the Flathead County Planning and Zoning Office to deny the permits for this project for the following reasons:

Public Safety Risk: With the recent addition of a massive RV park, our egress to Going-to-the-Sun Road is already dangerously congested. In the event of a wildfire, adding 230 more people to this specific bottleneck could lead to a catastrophic failure of emergency evacuation efforts.

Threat to Wildlife: This land is a documented corridor for bears, cougars, moose, elk, and wolves. Replacing their habitat with high-density housing increases the risk of dangerous human-wildlife encounters and permanently destroys a vital ecological path.

Jurisdictional Law Enforcement Gap: West Glacier sits in a "no-man's land" for law enforcement. With county sheriffs 30 miles away and NPS rangers restricted to park boundaries, there is no infrastructure to manage the public safety needs of a large, transient population.

Eroding Community Character: Glacier Avenue is a historic residential street. Forcing hundreds of daily commuters through this neighborhood turns a quiet town into a corporate thoroughfare, destroying the very features that draw visitors to our area in the first place.

The "Ask": We, the undersigned residents, neighbors, and friends of West Glacier, demand that the Flathead County Planning and Zoning Office prioritize community safety and environmental preservation over corporate profit. We ask you to deny the permits for the Pursuit Attractions and Hospitality Inc. GPI work camp and require the developer to find housing solutions that do not jeopardize our town. Any objections/comments can be sent to the Flathead County Planning and Zoning Office.
