The Issue

My sons, aged 12 and 14, discovered something that would profoundly impact their lives: BMX racing. It was at a free open house event at Waterford Oaks BMX Race Track that they found their passion. That day, I didn’t just see my sons race; I saw them come alive in a way I had never witnessed before. In today’s world, where kids often succumb to the lure of screens and face the pressures of anxiety and isolation, discovering a physical activity that brings pure joy is invaluable. Waterford Oaks BMX Race Track is more than just a sporting facility; it’s a sanctuary where kids have the freedom to be themselves, build friendships, and develop important life skills in a healthy environment.

Unfortunately, there are imminent plans to shut down this beloved track, which serves as a beacon of positivity for our community. This closure would not only be a tremendous loss to my family but also to countless others who rely on this track as a vital outlet for their children's energy and imagination. BMX racing encourages teamwork, perseverance, and self-confidence — values that are critical in today’s society.

Waterford Oaks BMX Race Track is a pivotal venue in Oakland County that hosts various recreational and competitive events. It attracts families from all over the county and beyond, strengthening community bonds and fostering a sense of belonging among participants and spectators alike. According to Oakland County Parks and Recreation data, the track serves hundreds of families yearly, providing an accessible and affordable form of fun and exercise.

Closing the track would deprive children of the chance to discover new interests and create lifelong passions. It would be a serious blow to promoting outdoor activities in a safe environment, especially at a time when childhood obesity rates in the U.S. are alarmingly high. According to the CDC, nearly 1 in 5 (19.3%) of children and adolescents are affected by obesity, making facilities like Waterford Oaks crucial in combating these statistics.

We call on Oakland County Parks to reconsider the decision and preserve Waterford Oaks BMX Race Track for future generations. Investment in our children today will assuredly lead to a brighter tomorrow. Please help protect and maintain this cherished community asset.
