Save Vivian’s Open Space

Save Vivian’s Open Space
The Issue
Who we are
As neighbors of Vivian Elementary School, we’re petitioning for Jeffco Public Schools to work with a potential buyer, such as the City of Lakewood, to ensure that the open space surrounding the school is preserved for open space or a park.
What’s at stake
- Vivian Elementary School and its surrounding land is being sold as part of Jeffco Public School’s property disposition process.
- There are 9.9 acres for sale and the property is zoned as R-1-6. This allows for single-family homes with lot minimums of 6,000 square feet each. Based on those numbers—9.9 acres divided by 6,000 square feet—there could be approximately 70 homes built in the area.
- This land was donated to the school district nearly 70 years ago and remains the heart of our community. It’s a place where neighbors visit, children play, and dogs run freely.
- Ward 1 in Lakewood, where this property is located, already has the lowest density of parks and open space in the city. Losing this land to development would remove the neighborhood’s only open space and reduce even further the small amount of open space we have in Ward 1.
Why we need to act now
- Jeffco Public Schools has outlined a very fast timeline for choosing a buyer for this property. Proposals are due October 7 and a recommendation will be made by October 21.
- Voice your concern and sign the petition before a decision is made! Let Jeffco Public Schools know that we want them to find a buyer who will save Vivian’s open space.
