The proposed Utah bill HB 281 would be disastrous if approved and implemented. Utah’s students would be exposed to unsafe situations in their homes, because of what happens at school. This bill would require school therapists to get the permission of a parent to talk to a student, and if the parents deny permission, that student could not get the help they need. School therapists wouldn’t be able to talk to the student at all about any specific thing if their parent said they couldn’t, this includes things about abuse or suicide. Not only that, but the therapist is required to give the parent a summary of what they discussed, even if that includes what the student said about a parent. This would be devastating for students who are not safe in their own home, as well as making students feel uncomfortable with telling someone at school if they are in an unsafe or scary situation. This bill puts on the false guise of helping parents keep track of their children, but would ultimately put Utah’s students in grave danger. This bill has already made it to the Senate, we cannot let it get further.
