SAVE US FROM THE NOISE!
The Issue
PETITION FREE TO SIGN. NO DONATION REQUIRED.
We, the undersigned residents of areas surrounding the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, call on the NMBMM and MBDA to save us from the distressing noise generated by some events held on the precinct outside the stadium structure.
KEY CONCERNS:
- Excessive Noise: Noise levels (sometimes until 02h00, and including Sundays) are terribly distressing, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and shift workers.
- Harm to children: The high concentration of schools around the Stadium indicate a large population of school-aged children. Our children cannot sleep at bedtime and they struggle at school the next day.
- Distress to the Elderly: Many of us are elderly and live close to the stadium and Residences such as Alamein Court, Mothwa Haven, and Van Der Vyver. We are disproportionately affected by the noise.
- Impact on workers: The distress and a lack of rest affects our performance at work. Some of us are paramedics and nurses… lives could be at risk if we do not have adequate rest.
- Repeated Complaints Ignored: Despite our complaints to the Metro Police and the Department of Public Health over the years, the noise and filth from events held on the grounds outside the NMB Stadium continue to terrorise us.
- Rubbish dirties our streets: The litter often blows all over the place. North End is already not cleaned by the NMBMM and these events just make the filth worse.
We appreciate that the Stadium is an asset to our Metro and support that it must be used to grow the economy and create jobs; but this “use” must not infringe on our Section 25 Constitutional right to an environment that is not harmful to our health.
DEMAND:
- No noise exemptions may be granted, and
- Noise must be reduced, and
- The duration of noisy events must be no longer than 2 hours, and
- The filth must be cleaned up immediately after the event, ALTERNATIVELY,
- Future events held on the Nelson Mandela Stadium precinct must be relocated to venues that do not negatively affect densely populated residential areas.
We urge that the NMBMM take immediate action to address these concerns and prevent further harm to our community.
Thank you.
