The Issue
This is a public distress call to Bill Johnston and Ronda Stryker:
Please save Up and Unders.
Rugger’s Up and Unders, otherwise known as “Up’s” is a long lived, integral part of Kalamazoo culture. It is a place where all neighborhoods of Kalamazoo congregate. City of Kalamazoo proper, Vine, Stuwart, Oshtemo, Portage, Gull road folks and our beloved Northside. It truly is a bar where everyone knows your name. “Cheers”. We have been so lucky to have a place to call our own and celebrate Kalamazoo on any given night.
To learn recently that the current buyer is bulldozing, leveling, destroying the place so many of us call home, is heartbreaking to say the least. The transaction is done. There’s nothing we can do, unless..
Bill and Ronda, you have the power to conserve the very essence of the Kalamazoo culture we all hold so dearly. I ask for a donation. You have given so much to this city. Whether it’s the Kalamazoo Promise or the beautiful art school at Western. You are some of our favorite billionaires, because you truly do care. I do not think that you would ever want this collateral damage that the impending arena is causing to happen. But the sad truth is, it’s happening and it’s causing pain. What is the point of bringing people to our city if there’s hardly any soul left to show them?
I think this is the only way to save “Up’s” and preserve 40% of Kalamazoo’s culture:
Please:
Buy the 2 million dollar plot, both Up’s and Bunca car wash, off the current buyer. Then, give a down payment of $100,000 - $200,000 to a future business owner who wants to take over the building that is currently Rugger’s Up and Unders.
If you do so, you will be a hero in so many of our eyes. As my heart breaks, I plead to you, on behalf of all of us, please save our neighborhood bar. It’s truly the best home in all of Kalamazoo.
