Save Uintah Middle School — Don't Close Our School Without Hearing the Students
The Issue
We are asking the Uintah School District Board of Education to keep Uintah Middle School open and to fully consider the voices of the students, parents, teachers, staff, alumni, and community members who would be affected by its closure.
Uintah Middle School is more than a building. It is a school community where students learn, build friendships, participate in activities, develop confidence, and create memories that will stay with them long after middle school.
The Uintah School Board has begun studying the potential closure of Uintah Middle School at the end of the 2026–2027 school year. We understand that the district is facing declining enrollment, financial challenges, and concerns about school facilities. We also understand that difficult decisions sometimes have to be considered.
But students deserve to be part of that conversation.
Before a decision is made to close Uintah Middle School, we ask the Board to:
• Fully evaluate alternatives to closing UMS.
• Clearly explain the financial savings expected from closure and the costs associated with moving students and reorganizing other schools.
• Consider the educational, transportation, extracurricular, social, and community impacts of closure.
• Give students, parents, teachers, staff, alumni, and community members meaningful opportunities to provide input.
• Consider the long-term effects of concentrating students into fewer middle-school facilities.
• Consider the impact on mental health of students and staff.
• Take into consideration law enforcement input and potential impact on violence and crime rates.
• Evaluate the impact of maxing enrollment capabilities at Vernal Middle School including building capacity, safety concerns, and class sizes.
• Publish the information and data being used to make this decision so the community can understand and evaluate the proposal.
• Seriously consider the voices of the students who attend Uintah Middle School today.
We are not asking the Board to ignore the district's financial or enrollment challenges.
We are asking the Board to listen before making a decision that will affect hundreds of students and families.
Uintah Middle School is our school.
Please listen to our voices.
Please keep Uintah Middle School open.
