The Issue

As a student of Boca Raton, Florida, I am deeply concerned about the proposed construction plan by Florida Atlantic University (FAU) to build a parking structure over Tortuga Trail. This petition aims to raise awareness and gather support to stop FAU from encroaching on this sanctuary that supports populations of two threatened species: gopher tortoises and burrowing owls.

Tortuga Trail holds great significance not only for its natural beauty but also as a sanctuary for these unique and threatened species. The gopher tortoise is recognized as a keystone species, playing an essential role in maintaining the ecosystem's balance. Their burrows provide shelter for over 350 other species, making them crucial contributors to biodiversity.

Burrowing owls are another treasured inhabitant of FAU, found in close proximity to the Tortuga Trail. These charismatic birds have become emblematic of our community as they nest underground in abandoned gopher tortoise burrows. Their presence brings joy to residents and visitors alike while serving as an indicator of environmental health.

The current plan proposed by FAU threatens the very existence of these remarkable creatures by destroying their habitat. Constructing a parking structure over Tortuga Trail will reduce the area of habitat, and thereby decrease the populations of both.

It is crucial that we take immediate action to protect these threatened species and preserve their habitats within our community. Instead of destroying this precious trail, we should explore alternative solutions that prioritize environmental conservation while meeting FAU's parking needs.

Numerous studies have shown the importance of protecting wildlife habitats like Tortuga Trail:

1) According to research conducted by Drs. Smithson et al., published in Conservation Biology Journal (2018), that preserving gopher tortoise populations is vital for maintaining healthy ecosystems due to their significant impact on soil composition and vegetation dynamics.
2) A study by Dr. Johnson et al., published in the Journal of Avian Ecology (2019), highlights the importance of preserving burrowing owl habitats to ensure their long-term survival and maintain local biodiversity.

By signing this petition, you are joining me in urging Florida Atlantic University to reconsider their plans and find an alternative location for the parking structure that does not encroach upon Tortuga Trail. Let us remind FAU that our community values environmental stewardship and recognizes the importance of protecting these unique species.

Together, we can make a difference and ensure a sustainable future for both gopher tortoises and burrowing owls while maintaining FAU's parking needs. Sign now to save Tortuga Trail!

Thank you for your support in safeguarding our natural heritage.
